Famine among the Financial Giants
To me there is an irony to the siting of the Famine memorial. Customs House Quay makes sense, the entry and exit point for shipping, where so many left for a better life. However, it is now primarily the financial services area with many giants of Irish corporate finance located nearby. Modern Ireland is very different, the people are no longer repressed slaves. But, there is still a dependence for many on the wealthy landlord and a new dependence - the corporate giants. As the world faces economic uncertainty, the risks increasing daily, there is a fear that a depression will occur. The Famine memorial is a reminder of how dependent and fragile a nation we were and sparks a little fear as we ponder what is ahead.
